Veteran Information

If you are eligible for one of the following chapters you can use your benefits at ORU.  The following is a brief description of the Chapters.  Additional information on the Chapters and eligibility requirements can be found at http://www.gibill.va.gov.

 

Chapter 33 - Post 9/11 GI Bill

To qualify, one must:

  • Have served on active duty after September 10, 2001, for:
    • A minimum of 90 aggregate days (excluding entry level and skill training).
    • At least 30 continuous days if discharged for a service-oriented disability.

Active duty members are eligible the 90th day after completion of entry level training.

Benefits are transferable to spouse and/or dependents.

Effective August 1, 2012, the VA will pay up to $18,077.50 towards net tuition and fees per academic year.  The monies for tuition and fees are paid directly to ORU.  The percentage of benefits paid is based on the Veteran's eligibility.

Students enrolled at least half-time receive a monthly housing allowance to assist with housing and living expenses.  The monthly housing allowance is paid directly to the student.  Active duty personal are not eligible for the housing allowance.

Students also receive a stipend to assist in covering the cost of books and supplies.  This is provided in a lump sum paid directly to the student each semester.  Active duty personnel are not eligible for the stipend.

Students who qualify for 100% eligibility for Chapter 33 benefits may also receive a Yellow Ribbon scholarship from ORU based on eligibility.  Active duty personnel are not eligible for the Yellow Ribbon program.

 

Chapter 30 - Montgomery GI Bill                                   

To qualify, one must:

  • Have entered active duty after June 30, 1985.
  • Have Chapter 34 eligibility and served on active duty after June 30, 1985.

Monthly benefits are paid directly to the student.

 

Chapter 31 - Veteran Vocational Rehabilitation

  • To qualify, student must have been injured while on active duty.
  • Form VA-28-1905 must be received from the VA Counseling Center.

 Chapter 1606 - Montgomery GI and Selected Reserve Bill

  • Educational benefits for active members of the Selected Reserve.  Basic eligibility requires a six year commitment to serve in the Selected Reserve and satisfactory participation in required Selected Reserve training.

Monthly benefits are paid directly to the student.

 

Chapter 1607 - Reserve Educational Assistance Program

  • Educational benefits for active members of the Selected Reserve called to active duty and members of the Individual Ready Reserve called to active duty in response to a contingency operation declared by the President or Congress.

Monthly benefits are paid directly to the student.

 

Chapter 35 - Dependents Educational Assistance

  • The dependents of a veteran may qualify for benefits under this program if the veteran is permanently and totally disabled due to service-related conditions.

Monthly benefits are paid directly to the student.

 

First Steps

  • Apply and be admitted into the University. Admissions Office.
  • Apply for benefits through the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Follow the links on their website to apply for benefits.
  • If transferring benefits under Chapter 33 to a spouse or dependent you will need to complete a Transfer of Entitlement Form. This document, along with instructions, can be found on the Department of Veterans Affairs website.
  • Once you have been approved for educational benefits you will receive a Certificate of Eligibility (COE).  This will explain the benefits for which you are entitled.  You will need to submit a copy of this letter to the VA Certifying Officer in the Registrar's Office at ORU.
  • Each semester, once you have enrolled, you will need to complete and submit your VA Questionnaire.
