ORU introduces Debate Squad

By Ally Powell (13)

Oral Roberts University's Communication, Arts and Media department has recently introduced a competitive debate squad.

"The motivation behind the debate squad is for our students to go out into the world and to be able to give reasons why they believe in what they believe," said Agena Farmer, faculty adviser for the debate team.

Parliamentary debate and policy debate are the two main types of debating that students will participate in. Parliamentary debate focuses on persuading an audience, while policy debate is created using long-term research that has the goal of solving a problem. Students will have the opportunity to participate in numerous tournaments throughout the fall and spring semesters.

By participating in intercollegiate debating, students can receive three hours of credit.

To be involved in ORU's debate squad, students have the option of joining the debate club or registering in the class. The Communications Seminar: Debate/Forensics Club will meet from 3:50 to 5:05 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

The first debate tournament took place on Sept. 23 and 24 in Hutchinson, Kan.

Students interested in participating in intercollegiate competitive debate can call Farmer at (918) 495-6862 or send an email to afarmer@oru.edu.
