Sean Sutton Added to ORU Basketball Staff

Former Oklahoma State men's basketball head coach Sean Sutton has been added to the coaching staff at Oral Roberts University. President Dr. Mark Rutland and men's basketball head coach Scott Sutton made the announcement at a Thursday press conference on the Mabee Center arena floor.

Sean Sutton will serve as ORU's Executive Advisor to the basketball staff. In his new role Sutton will be allowed to interact with coaches during games and practices but will not be permitted to provide direct instruction to players. He is serving in an unpaid capacity.

"I approached Scott with the idea of asking Sean to lend his expertise to the team, because I believe strongly in stewardship of talent. Sean has talents as a coach that shouldn't lay idle, so we created a great opportunity for him to utilize his skills at ORU. I am excited that he has agreed to work alongside his brother for the betterment of this great program," said Dr. Mark Rutland, president of ORU.

"ORU was built on a foundation of healing. Oral Roberts strongly believed that God could heal people not only physically but also emotionally. I know this new volunteer post with the Golden Eagles will be an integral part of the healing process for Sean and his future success as a coach."

Sean Sutton coached Oklahoma State from 2006-08 and posted a 39-29 record in his two seasons in Stillwater. He previously spent 13 seasons as an assistant to his father Eddie, who coached the Cowboys for 16 seasons. Sean Sutton also served as an assistant coach at Mississippi State during the 1992-93 campaign.

"This is a great day for ORU basketball and for me personally," said Scott Sutton. "I'm excited and thankful for the opportunity that Dr. Rutland has provided for me and Sean to work together, and for Sean to lend his expertise to our staff."

With a combined 1,049 wins the Sutton's are the most successful father-son basketball coaching combination in NCAA history.

Sean Sutton is a 1992 graduate of Oklahoma State where he helped guide the Cowboys to the Sweet 16 in 1991 and 1992. He played two seasons (1987-89) at Kentucky where he was also coached by his father.

As a player and coach, Sean Sutton has been a part of 13 NCAA Tournaments, four NITs and two Final Fours.

The Golden Eagles begin practice on Friday, Oct. 15. ORU returns four starters from last season's squad which went 20-13 and produced victories over Missouri, New Mexico and Stanford.
