Basic Elements Discussed in a Book Report on Nonfiction

1. Title and Theme

• Identify the underlying idea(s).
• How is the title related to the theme?
• What problems are presented?
• How are they resolved?
• Are the problems universal or limited to the author?
• These are some of the questions to be considered.

2. Author, Point of View, and Purpose

• Give details of the author’s life that have a bearing upon his writing.
• What are the author’s viewpoint and purpose?

3. Summary of the Major Points

These may be events, crises, incidents, etc.

4. Personal Comment

• This is your response to the work. How did it make you feel?
• In your opinion, what are the major strengths and weaknesses of this particular work?
