VERTERAN INFORMATION

Can I Use VA Benefits at ORU?

If you are eligible for one of the following chapters you can use your benefits at ORU:

  • Chapter 30- Montgomery GI Bill:
    To qualify, one must:
    • Have entered active duty after June 30, 1985.
      • Those with initial obligations of less than 3 years must serve 2 continuous years of active duty. All others must serve 3 continuous years;
      • Must be honorably discharged;
      • Must have secondary school diploma or equivalent.
    • Have Chapter 34 eligibility and served on active duty after June 30, 1985.
      • Must have been eligible to receive Chapter 34 benefits on December 31, 1989;
      • Must be honorably discharged, service-connected disability or hardship; or discharged for convenience of government after serving until at least December 31, 1987;
      • Must have secondary school diploma or equivalent.
  • Chapter 34 - G.I. Bill:
    To qualify, student must have been initially in the service before December 31, 1976. Benefits are also available for spouse and children. Program ended December 31, 1989. Selected veterans may be eligible to convert to chapter 1606.
  • Chapter 31 - Veteran Vocational Rehabilitation:
    To qualify, student must have been injured while on active duty. Form VA-28-1905 must be received from Mr. Bill Wicks, VA Counseling Center. Mr. Wicks then provides ORU with a list of students eligible for Vocational Rehabilitation benefits each semester.
  • Chapter 1606 - Guard and Reserve Bill:
    • Have agreed to serve six (6) years in the Selected Reserve. If an officer, the agreement to serve in the Selected Reserve for six (6) years is in addition to any other period of obligation Selected Reserve required to perform.
    • Must be an active member of the Selected Reserve.
    • Be a high school graduate or have obtained an equivalency certificate of high school completion
    • Have completed Initial Active Duty for training (IADT), plus reserve training.
  • Chapter 35 - Survivors and Dependents Assistance Program:
    The dependents of a veteran may qualify for benefits under this program if the veteran died; became 100% disabled as a result of a service related injury; or is now listed as missing in action, captured, detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power for more than 90 days.
  • Chapter 32 - Veterans Educational Assistance Program:
    To qualify, student must have been initially in the service after January 1, 1977, and have made educational contributions during active duty or paid a lump sum.

How do I start?

  • Apply to the Oral Roberts University Admissions Office.
  • Apply to the Department of Veteran Affairs. (We can provide you with an application or you can contact your local DVA for an application.)
  • Once you have been accepted you are ready to set up your Veteran File in the Registrar's Department.
