Commuter Life

Life at ORU for Local Residents

ORU has much to offer those who are local Tulsa residents. From the start, we recognize that you are a unique part of our community, and we strive to help connect you to the campus and make your ORU experience everything it ought to be. Starting at Harbor, we have special sessions and opportunities just for you. If you are an adult learner, there is a time where we meet you to connect and give you information about your journey at ORU. Please visit our adult learner page for more information. If you are recent high school graduate or young transfer student, we connect you with a crew of students, both residential and commuter, that is led by a current student who is there to help you navigate through your first semester. That crew meets every week for the fall semester, and it's here that you will begin to make the relationships and memories that will last a lifetime, as well as fully acclimating to the ORU life!

As a commuter there are some unique opportunities for involvement and connection. Our Community Builder program oversees the various demographics that make up our commuter population (young married, married with children, etc.), and plans special events that meets the needs of each demographic. If you are single and between the ages of 18-24 we connect you with the Adopt-A-Commuter program, where you are paired up with a residential wing on campus that you will be a part of - banquets, intramural sports, etc. Intramural sports are also available to commuter-only teams of all ages. The Vice President of Graduates & Commuters in Student Association is a student leader who is there to serve you and help set up unique events just for commuters, as well as making sure all of the information about any events or activities on campus is in your hands!

In addition to all of this, we have a special online community (the "ORU OC") where you can set up your own personal profile, make friends, join groups and find out more information about the events on campus, read weekly "hall meeting" notes and find out urgent information (like when school is canceled due to inclement weather).

These are just some of the ways that we strive to connect you from your first day here as a commuter student. We highly encourage you to get involved in intramural sports, community outreach and missions, the community builder program and many other leadership opportunities. The more you plug into ORU life, the better your experience will be! ORU is a great place to make the connections and build the community that will make your college experience the foundation for a lifetime of success!
