ORU Enactus to host Young Adult Burn Survivor Conference
By Chandler Elmore '14
Oral Roberts University's Enactus chapter hosted the second annual Young Adult Burn Survivor Conference March 7-10, 2013. The conference was held at Camp Loughridge and aided over 35 burn survivors between the ages of 15 and 20.
The Young Adult Burn Survivor Conference, in partnership with the Oklahoma Firefighter’s Burn Camp, was themed “More than a Conqueror.” Sessions focused on preparing and equipping young burn survivors to move beyond their physical, emotional, and psychological scars in order to pursue their dreams.
Guest speakers for the conference included Dr. Ruth Rimmer, world-renowned burn psychiatrist from the Arizona Burn Center; Tom Pickens, pastor of Antelope Valley Christian Center in Lancaster, Calif.; Kiki Vo, burn survivor and motivational speaker; and ORU Senior Dustin Wise, author and burn survivor.
“Our goal is to teach burn survivors that their scars do not determine their destiny,” said Wise. “The Young Adult Burn Survivor Conference is another way for ORU students to ‘go into every man’s world.’ It allows them to make a difference by teaching others vital skills needed to succeed in life as well as business.”
