Students Use Skills to Raise Awareness for Cards for Kiva

Journalism instructor Chris Putman's branding and promotions class is getting real-world experience through their classroom assignment. They have adopted a special client with whom to practice their newly learned skills. That client is Cards for Kiva.

Kiva is a nonprofit organization that provides micro loans to people in impoverished nations. Cards for Kiva was founded by two local women who create vintage, handcrafted greeting cards that are sold online and at a local coffee shop to generate money to make micro loans through Kiva.

The students will build a promotional package to help raise awareness for Cards for Kiva as well as the cause they support. The students will gather data for consumer insight on the product, write press releases to gain exposure, design ads, place the product in new venues and schedule media purchases. Students have met with the client who taught them how to make the cards. They created 150 cards to sell.
