ORU Students Preparing for Model United Nations
Nearly 30 ORU students are busy preparing for their upcoming participation in the 50th annual Model United Nations conference Feb. 17-20 in St. Louis. Under the direction of Dr. Solomon Gemeda, the students will represent the countries of Egypt and North Korea in a mock United Nations competition with nearly 70 other schools from the Midwest.
Students serve on one of four different committees in the conference, depending on the student's particular interest in the topics to be debated. Topics include Implementation of the Development, Stockpiling, and use of Chemical Weapons, Review of Peacekeeping Operations in Sudan, and many more. The conference has three main objectives: to promote interest and understanding of the nations of the world; to help students gain a broader perspective on global issues and the role of the United Nations in world politics; and to encourage investigation into the field of international studies. In previous years the ORU delegation has represented countries including Israel, France, Denmark, Panama, The Philippines, and several others in the competition, winning numerous individual awards for the participants.
