Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts University’s Theatre Department is excited to present the
Tony-nominated musical Bright Star for its first-ever performance in Oklahoma. The
collegiate premiere production will be at ORU’s Howard Auditorium March 7-10, 2019.
Bright Star is a musical by award-winning screenwriter and playwright Steve Martin
and chart-topping singer-songwriter Edie Brickell, inspired by their Grammy-winning
collaboration on the bluegrass album Love Has Come for You.
The musical is set in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains in 1945 with flashbacks
to 1923 and is the story of a young soldier just home from World War II who meets
the brilliant editor of a southern literary journal. Together they discover a powerful
secret that changes their lives. Even though there is heartache and loss in the two
love stories, Martin and Brickell frame it with lyrical bluegrass melodies, pointing
us toward optimism rather than gloom. Based on a real-life event, Bright Star reminds
us that no matter how dark our lives get “the sun is gonna shine again.” Variety describes
it as a gorgeous anthem to optimism!
Performances are at 7:30pm Thursday through Saturday with a matinee performance at
2:00pm on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased
online.
