Unique Social Work VR Experience and Nursing Sim Lab Open House
Tulsa, OK – Oral Roberts University continues innovating with new and unique ways
to educate its students. As part of its annual homecoming celebration, ORU will showcase
two unique learning opportunities.
First, the College of Nursing will host an Open House for its new Sim Lab on Friday,
November 9, 2018 from 12:15 to 3:30pm. Six new state-of-the-art manikins, each with
"blood" circulation, a respiratory system, and the ability to talk, were added to
the lab. A newborn nursery has also been added along with a high-fatality lab to help
students gain safe, hands-on experience in a variety of situations before moving on
to real-world learning.
Secondly, on Friday night, November 9, 2018 at 5:30pm, ORU will introduce its new
360-immersive experience in the University’s Social Work Program. Recently the University
filmed two 360-immersive experiences depicting challenging situations that professionals
may encounter, including a Child Protective Services home assessment and a veteran
suffering from suicidal ideations. These will allow students to participate in a decision-tree-style
simulation that will provide real-time feedback on their decision-making, allowing
them to safely develop the quick-thinking skills necessary for social work.
“The premise behind creating the 360-immersive experience is focused on attaching
emotion to an experience, ultimately promoting engaged learning and information retention,”
said Stacey Blaylock, Director of ORU’s Social Work Program. “The ORU Social Work
Program is one of the few in the United States with access to virtual reality technology
and we are excited to utilize it to elevate the traditional role play model.”
The University was able to collaborate with The Department of Human Services and the Tulsa Police Department on the project.
