When: November 28, 2017 at 7pm

Tulsa, OK – The importance of national identity in the midst of a globalized world is the subject of the next installment of the President’s Performing Arts & Lecture Series at Oral Roberts University.

ORU will welcome The Heritage Foundation's Michael Gonzalez to the Global Learning Center on Tuesday, November 28, 2017 at 7pm. Gonzalez will present his lecture, “A Democracy Needs a Demos: A Global View of Why National Identity is Essential for America and Also Good for the World” ("demos" being the Greek word for "a people”). In this lecture, Gonzalez will focus on why we feel instability and danger in an increasingly connected world, and argue these feelings arise when we don’t have a sense of who we are and where we belong.

Gonzalez is a senior fellow at the Kathryn and Shelby Cullom Davis Institute for International Studies. He spent close to 20 years as a journalist, 15 of them reporting from Europe, Asia and Latin America. He left journalism to join the administration of President George W. Bush, where he was a speechwriter for the Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission before moving on to the State Department’s European Bureau, where he wrote speeches and Op-Eds. Gonzalez joined The Heritage Foundation in 2009. As a senior research fellow he has written on Hong Kong, China and Latin America. Gonzalez was born in Cuba and left when he was 12. He has also resided in Belgium, France, Spain, Hong Kong, and South Korea, and has spent months living in and reporting from Afghanistan, Pakistan, China, Panama and Cyprus, among others.

The lecture is free but participants are asked to go to this link, ORUGLC.com, to obtain a ticket. Dress is Business Professional.
The Michael Gonzalez lecture is the second in ORU’s new cultural series celebrating the Performing Arts and highlighting thought leaders of our time. The inaugural event featured The David Osborne Trio. The Series will generally alternate between performing arts and lecture events, with usually one of each per academic semester, fall and spring.
