Developing Whole Leaders for the whole World

ORU Students Change Lives Through Summer Missions

By Jordan Buie

Oral Roberts University recently sent 462 students to 18 countries on summer missions. The teams traveled to four continents including Africa, Asia, Europe and South America.

“This summer ORU students fulfilled the founder’s vision by going ‘to the uttermost bounds of the earth’ as the hands and feet of Jesus,” said Director of ORU Missions and Outreach Bobby Parks. “I know that the time these students sacrificed to help others has made a lasting impact on the hearts of those they served.”

The development trip to Brazil is still in-country. The team is working with cashew farmers in remote villages to help them identify opportunities to sell their agricultural products.

Team Guatemala worked to install 50 bio-sand water filters for those in remote villages. These filters will provide families with clean water for 30 to 40 years.

Four teams were sent to India. The teams worked with women and children from broken families. They volunteered at orphanages, participated in work projects and worked to spread the love of Christ.

ORU sent 12 teams to Israel to bless those living in the Holy Land as well as those attending the Jerusalem 2015 Global Congress. The students participated in several outreaches handing out groceries, giving blood and cleaning neighborhoods.

Team Thailand taught English at Santisuk English School. These future educators built relationships with students ranging from junior high to college age, while gaining experience in their professional field.

Team Zimbabwe traveled around the country’s capital of Harare performing plays about God’s love in public schools and churches. They partnered with Celebration Church, the largest church in Zimbabwe.

“We just came back from the Philippines,” said Freshman Desiree Cortez. “I’m really going to miss everyone there. My favorite part was doing children’s ministry every Saturday morning. There were about 100 kids every Saturday, and it was just so much fun getting to know them.”
