ORU Reports Enrollment Growth for Sixth Straight Year

ORU enrollment growthThe Oral Roberts University community is full of excitement with the entrance of the 50th freshman class! This group of freshman joins with other students to create the sixth straight year of enrollment growth for the institution. With 3,481 students this fall, ORU topped the 2013 student count by 78. Freshman retention remained strong at over 80 percent for the fifth consecutive year.

“In today’s competitive higher education environment, I am excited to see the number of non-traditional, online learners joining our ranks, and I look forward to getting to know these students, as well as our traditional residential students, who made ORU their educational institution of choice,” said ORU President William M. Wilson.

Wilson also noted, “We are deeply committed to continuing to create avenues for future students from around the world to gain access to our unique whole person education.” Under the president’s guidance this past year, the university’s Globalization Task Force served alongside the enrollment management team as students were brought from 84 countries and all 50 states this fall to prepare themselves to face the challenges of their chosen educational and career paths. The result is that ORU is up from the previous year by 11 nations. To help support its global mandate, the institution expanded access to ORU’s whole person education for students worldwide through a proprietary online learning portal and by increasing international residential students. This year’s enrollment includes students from nations new to ORU, including: Albania, Bolivia, Bulgaria, Denmark, Dominica, Estonia, Faroe Islands, Greece, Haiti, Malawi, Mongolia, Romania and Spain.

Students, many of whom received the recently created Quest Whole Person Scholarships, came to campus this fall to find nine new majors that aligned with the president’s globalization initiative and numerous campus improvements. New degree programs included Cinema, Television and Digital Media, English Language Teaching in the Global Classroom, Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Global Ministry and the Marketplace, Global Studies with a concentration in Latin America, the Middle East, or Asia, Mathematical Finance, Mathematical Physics, Mathematical Pre-Actuary and Social Justice. The university also added a new minor in Mandarin Chinese.

The university spent more than $6 million on campus improvements ranging from asphalt reconstruction to office remodeling. Highlights include the addition of a 3D Fabrication and Visualization Lab, a new HD screen in Christ’s Chapel and a brand new International Center for students.

The Quest Whole Person Scholarship Program has been a catalyst for many students to attend ORU this year. This program is designed to aid well-rounded students who dream of furthering their education. These students are on a quest for wholeness and demonstrate the following: Christian worldview, lifestyle of service, academic achievement, leadership ability, vision to make a life-changing impact on others, and a healthy lifestyle.
