Developing Whole Leaders for the whole World

ORU Professor Recognized by White House

By Chandler Elmore '14

Oral Roberts University Professor Andrew Lang was recognized by the White House as a Champion of Change. The College of Science and Engineering professor presented at The White House concerning open science on Thursday, June 20, 2013.

Lang co-presented with collaborator Jean-Claude Bradley, of Drexel University. Both men are at the forefront of open science, which can be loosely defined as the practice of making research publicly available as it is recorded. Lang also spoke about open science techniques in 2009 at the exclusive Science Foo Camp, which is run by O'Reilly, Nature Publishing Group and Google.

The White House invited Lang because of his work to promote open science as a means to accelerate progress and improve our world. Lang makes it a regular practice to provide free access to his research and also publishes data in various open access journals.

“Open Science is something I am passionate about,” said Lang. “If researchers can create an atmosphere of collaboration it could revolutionize our culture through technological advances and new scientific discoveries. I am ecstatic that our national leaders have taken such an interest in research collaboration.”

“We are proud of Dr. Lang’s numerous accomplishments both inside and outside the classroom,” said ORU Vice President of Academic Affairs Debbie Sowell. “Dr. Lang’s dedication and experience have been a blessing to the ORU College of Science and Engineering and have inspired countless students to pursue careers within the scientific community.”
