NCAA National Championships Await ORU Athletes

NCAAThe Oral Roberts University track and field team qualified three athletes for the NCAA Championship final rounds, and will travel to Eugene, Ore., this week in an attempt to add to the list of individual NCAA National Champions at ORU. The meet will begin for ORU on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

ORU has three track and field national titles to its credit, including Jack Whitt, who won the pole vault event last year. Whitt is one of three Golden Eagles who will make the trek to TrackTown as he tries to defend his title, having tied for first at the preliminary round. Whitt will take to the runway for the finals on Wednesday, June 5, at 4 p.m.

Also competing on Wednesday, Jeffery Gibson will face the semifinals of the 400m hurdles, but enters the event having posted the best qualifying time of either of the two regionals. Gibson broke his own school record (49.80) and blew away the field in each of the first two rounds. The finals of the 400m hurdles will be contested on Friday at 4:40 p.m.

The final competitor for ORU, Morrie Turner will compete in the finals of the long jump at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6. Turner has continued to peak at the right time as he improved his lifetime best to 25-0.50 (7.63m) at the preliminary round in Austin, finishing 10th overall in the event.
