ORU Hosts Summer College Preparatory Institute
Oral Roberts University hosted the first ever College Preparatory Institute (CPI) for high school juniors and seniors May 19-24, 2013. Through the program students experienced an accelerated, hands on learning environment designed to prepare them for their future.
CPI incorporated a week of learning in an interactive, workshop style environment. Students learned from ORU’s exceptional professors by choosing two non-credit “majors” consisting of five, two hour classes. Majors included: conversational English, interactive broadcasting, introduction to graphic design, leadership and ministry in a Facebook, fast food world, music production, the science of art, introduction to marketing, introduction to publication design, law, government and international relations, photography and worship and artistic expression.
Participants heard from dynamic speakers including: Paul Daugherty, assistant pastor of Victory Christian Center; Josh Wagner, winner on season two of “The American Bible Challenge”; and Keith Wheeler, who is best known for carrying a 12-foot, wooden cross over 20,000 miles, through more than 150 countries on all seven continents.
CPI students also gained a realistic first glance into college life as well as a chance to experience ORU’s world renowned whole person education. Each day, students participated in group activities and special events such as athletic competitions, games, and team building exercises.
ORU’s CPI program concluded with a comprehensive assessment of each student. The assessment evaluated strengths and weaknesses and advised participants concerning potential college majors. The students were then advised in coursework and an individual plan was created to ensure their future success.
