ORU Debate Team Wins Big in IPDA Debate Tournament

Story written by Lacey Russ

ORU DebateThe Oral Roberts University debate team recently won a total of 16 awards in the IPDA tournament held at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark. The team competed against other colleges from Missouri, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The 10 member team sent six students to participate in the tournament and placed first in overall sweepstakes and second in debate sweepstakes.

Charlie Meadows received second place for varsity overall individual sweepstakes, while team mate Sarah Sandford placed third in the same category and Chris Rodgers received 5th place in the novice overall individual sweepstakes.  Other students to receive honors were Jasmine Cotton, Josh Wagoner, Chris Rodgers, Amber Dukes, and Asia Colbert.

The debate team was re-birthed on the ORU campus in 2011. Participating students gain experience in both parliamentary and policy debate techniques. Parliamentary debate focuses on persuading an audience, while policy debate uses long-term research to solve a problem.

"The motivation behind the debate squad is to showcase our students' ability to give a rationale for their beliefs as they defend them in a culture that is hostile to their Christian worldview," said Assistant ORU Professor and Debate Team Faculty Advisor Agena Farmer.

Students interested in joining the debate team should call (918) 495-6862 or email afarmer@oru.edu.
