ORU Track and Field Sends Care Package to Troops

The Oral Roberts University track and field program recently sent a care package to members of the U.S. Army who are currently serving their country in Afghanistan. Included in the group is former ORU student-athlete Chauncey Raiden.

Raiden and his fellow service men were the recipients of a care package that included powdered drinks, granola bars, coffee and other snacks put together by the track and field teams. An Altus, Okla., native, Raiden was a sprinter at ORU in the late 1990's.

"I would like to thank my coach Joe Dial, his wife Shawna and the Oral Roberts University track team for the great packages that they sent to my team here in Afghanistan," Raiden posted on the team's facebook page. "The guys loved everything! Thanks for adopting us as yours and I appreciate and love you guys."

Dial had this to say about the project: ""ORU track and field appreciates all of the hard work and dedication from our troops and their families. When one of our former athletes is counted among those serving overseas, their sacrifices hit closer to home. We wanted to let Chauncey know that we are thinking about him and supporting him. Our track and field team gathered supplies to send to him and his team. I know the personal effort that these kids put into these packages means a lot to Chauncey. We are hoping to have him come visit the team when he arrives safely back in the United States. Once a Golden Eagle, always a Golden Eagle!"

The team already has plans to put together another care package to send overseas within the coming months. Donations of supplies and money for postage are being accepted and those interested in supporting the project can contact Assistant Coach Shawna Dial (918-495-6839) for more information.
