Oral Roberts University holds groundbreaking of Alumni-Student Center

By Natasha Mitchell ('94)

ORU groundbreakingOral Roberts University officials held a groundbreaking ceremony on the Armand Hammer Alumni-Student Center on Wednesday, Jan. 25, after the 11 a.m. chapel service, on the south side of the construction site, near the Learning Resources Center. The event was held one day after the late Chancellor Oral Roberts' 95th birthday.

ORU President Mark Rutland, Jacquie Cardone, ORU Trustee and Hammer Center campaign chair, and Jentre Olsen, president of the ORU Student Association, gave remarks at this historic event.

The 28,000-square-foot alumni-student center is the first major building erected in over 27 years at ORU. The university announced in February 2011 that the center will be a place for food, fun and fellowship for ORU students.

Preliminary options include two food formats and a coffee format. The second floor of the center (which will be about 3,200 square feet) will house the ORU alumni and Career Services offices as well as a lounge for alumni. The center's lower level will contain ORU Student Association offices and workroom, more food services, game tech zone, a large main lounge, large living room area with a fireplace and seating (both inside and outside of the building).

A construction kick-off celebration will be held in February during Homecoming. Renderings of the new facility can be viewed at www.hammercenter.org.
