ORU Music Department presents Larry Dalton Memorial Concert

By Natasha Mitchell (94)

Larry DaltonThe Oral Roberts University Music Department presents the Larry Dalton Memorial Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 at Timko Barton Lobby. General admission is $10 and $5 for students at the door. The event is open to the public.

"Larry Dalton, a 1969 alumnus of the ORU Music department, was the leading force behind ORU becoming an All-Steinway School," said Randall Guthrie, professor of music and chairman of the ORU Music Department. "This concert will honor Larry's memory and will provide finances to purchase his personal Steinway for our department. Family and friends will gather for a great night of remembrance and music in Larry's honor."

Dalton, who died in 2009, was one of three Steinway artists in the Tulsa area. The other two are ORU alumni Donald Ryan and David Osborne. Dalton represented Steinway & Sons as the company's international representative, performing in many concerts around the world. He also worked with a number of big-name performers and orchestras over the years including the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College.

According to a previous article published in the Excellence magazine, Dalton began playing the piano at the age of 3. He became the pianist at his father's church a short time later in Big Stone Gap, Va. He performed with a gospel quartet and then came to ORU, where he was asked to play piano for Oral Roberts' crusades. Dalton was the music director for the Oral Roberts TV program and, later, the Richard Roberts program.

The concert will feature Joyce Bridgman, Richard Sutliff, Patti Holcombe-Thompson and Ryan. Dalton's CDs and piano arrangement books will also be available for sale.
