ORU nursing student saves little boy after near-drowning in TulsaTULSA, Oklahoma -- According to a story posted on NewsOn6.com, a nursing student at Oral Roberts University put her skills into action Monday. Montika Collins performed CPR and revived a 4-year-old boy who nearly drowned at the Creekwood Apartments in south Tulsa.
Collins says more than 30 people were celebrating the 4th of July holiday when the victim jumped into a crowded pool and began to swim, but then started to struggle.
"We were getting out of the pool to leave," Collins said. "I looked down and noticed he was at the bottom of the pool and not moving."
The boy was under water for 3-5 minutes, when Collins pulled the boy from the bottom of the pool and immediately began CPR. Her efforts paid off as the little boy started to breath and began to cough up water.
"I just tried to get him where he was stable," she said.
Although unresponsive, the boy was breathing, Collins said. But by the time Paramedics arrived and gave him oxygen, he started to cry very loudly.
"That's always a good sign," she said.
Police say the boy's parents were nearby but say this was not a case of neglect.
