ORU Hosts Math and Science Summer Academy

Oral Roberts University recently hosted a math and science summer academy for 48 local middle school students. This program provided opportunities for students to develop skills in mathematics and science. The academy was made possible by a $31,168 grant from the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education.

"Participating as an instructor and mentor during the ORU Summer Math and Science Academy is one of the highlights of my academic year," said Dominic Halsmer, Dean of the College of Science and Engineering. "It is so rewarding to help middle school students discover that math, science and engineering can be fun and exciting through projects like model rocketry."

Students used problem-solving ideas to participate in projects that involved mathematical and scientific experiences. Some of the activities include code breaking cryptology, fractal pattern recognition, field trips, real-world technologies, rocketry and laboratory work where students seek to understand the natural world.
