ORU Business Team Places Top 10 in Nation

An Oral Roberts University business team placed in the top 10 in the national competition for students in Free Enterprise (SIFE). There were over 600 universities fromORU Students and Faculty at the 2010 SIFE National Competition across the nation involved through the course of this year's competition.

"The accomplishments from the ORU SIFE team at the national expedition this year have put ORU on the map in the business world and corporate America in a way like never before," said Jennifer Cook, senior business student and president of ORU's SIFE team.

ORU's SIFE team created 29 different projects throughout the year and their presentation included seven of them. Some of their projects included: negotiating the price and purchase of almost 10,000 shoes for Iraqi children through World Compassion; working with Mpower to teach girls in Nepal how to sew; teaching workshops in Paraguay on various business-related topics; and teaching entrepreneurial skills to local artists.

The competition was based on which school had the most impact helping improve people's lives. The service project had to be educational and sustainable. Students form teams and apply business concepts to help develop projects that help people in need. After the presentation a panel of judges has five minutes to ask questions about the project. Then the judges scored them accordingly.

ORU's SIFE team had previously won the regional competition in Dallas to progress to the national competition. In the national competition they won second runner up in the semi-finals.

SIFE is an international non-profit organization that encourages college students to make a difference in their communities while helping them become a socially responsible business leader.
