Success Granted to Students with Disabilities

The Office of Student Resources at Oral Roberts University was awarded a $12,075 grant from the Waters Charitable Foundation. This grant will aid the office's Disability Service Center. Enhancements provided by this grant are a pool lift offering alternative exercise opportunities, a 32-inch flat panel monitor for magnification purposes, an external wheelchair lift for vehicles and an embosser with software for producing materials in Braille.

This equipment will allow the Office of Student Resources to offer more ways to help students succeed. This department has been working hard in recent years to expand in many areas. Last year they renovated their offices to create a better environment for students and also met requirements outlined by the Americans with Disabilities Act. In addition, they received four software programs to increase effectiveness in learning.

Danny Ziriax, director of Student Resources, is excited about their recent progress. Ziriax is continually seeking ways to provide for the needs of students with disabilities in order to make their college experience equivalent to the experience of other students.

"A lot of [these pieces of equipment] are not ADA requirements," Ziriax said. "They aren't things that the university is required to purchase, but it's certainly things that the university wants to do. In order to have that happen, we need to go off campus and find those funds."
