SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Former Oral Roberts University baseball standout Steve Holm has been named to the San Francisco Giants opening day roster for 2008.

Holm becomes ORU's first major leaguer since Keith Lockhart spent 10 seasons with three different organizations 1994-2003.

"This is the best day of my life," Holm said. "I was in Spring Training last year for two weeks, so this year when the first two weeks passed, I started feeling a little better about my chances. I was starting to hide so they couldn't cut me."

Originally a non-roster invitee to Spring Training, Holm is now listed as the backup catcher to Bengie Molina for the National League ball club. Holm was a shortstop for the Golden Eagles for two seasons (2000, 2001), but was asked to move to catcher in the minors.

Holm spent the 2007 season with the Connecticut Defenders (AA) in the Eastern League. He played in 84 games, hitting .272 with nine home runs and 28 RBI while earning EAS Mid-Season All-Star honors.

From 2001 to 2006, Holm spent most of his time in Class A action, but did make his Double-A debut in 2005 with Norwich.

Holm made his made professional debut with the 2001 Northwest League champion Salem-Keizer Volcanoes and batted .208 in 72 at-bats.

"Steve was a very special kid who had great baseball tools and was the smartest guy I have ever coached," said head coach Rob Walton.

"He was a great leader and the fact that he persevered in the Minor Leagues with the position switch shows his focus and great attitude. We hope the best for him and know that he is a great example of our baseball program here at Oral Roberts"

Holm spent the 2000-01 season with the Golden Eagles. In 2000, Holm was named Mid-Continent Conference Newcomer and Player of the Year, All-Tournament Team and first-team all-conference. Holm earned first-team honors again after the 2001 season before being drafted by the Giants.
