"We're involved as alumni [of ORU] for such a time as this," Alumni Board member Gene Gregg said, as he opened the ORU Alumni Connection Luncheon on Feb. 19.

"The changes that are being made right now on campus are so positive. Everybody has a voice. What the alumni think and feel is important to the Board of Trustees, to the faculty, to the staff. Now is our opportunity for influence and to get involved."

ORU Associate Vice President for Alumni and Development George Paul also commented that Homecoming 2008 was one of the most successful he had witnessed in his 15+ years of participating in and planning Homecoming events.

"There was an enthusiasm that permeated all those who attended," Paul said. "We see more synergy, more cohesion and more impact the university can make on the current students and on the world once they graduate."

Paul then introduced John Mason 77, the keynote speaker for the luncheon. Mason is a sought-after speaker and recognized author of several leadership books, which have sold over 1 million copies in 20 languages. During the luncheon, he shared with his fellow alumni about the value of adopting an attitude of thankfulness, especially in light of the Green family's donation to ORU and the positive changes that have occurred on campus.

"One of the most powerful things we can do as Christians is to be people that are appreciative, everywhere we go," Mason said. "I believe that we have an opportunity, as leaders in this community, to continue that spirit of appreciation. It will have an incredible impact, no matter where our feet take us."

Mason shared a series of stories and words of wisdom from well-known figures such as Cicero, Max Lucado and Francis Schaeffer. He brought the luncheon to a close by challenging everyone to set aside time to make a list of the things for which they are thankful. Ultimately, he said, focusing on gratitude will yield encouragement, creativity, opportunities and a healthy perspective.

"What would your life look like if you spent the next 20 years being the most grateful, appreciative person you know?" Mason asked. "Today is the day to be thankful. As ORU [alumni], today is the time to spread that gratefulness and to show that appreciation everywhere we go."

John and his wife, Linda (Bassett) 77, live in Tulsa, where John is the president of Insight International. They have four children, Michelle, Greg, Michael and David. For more information about John Mason and his work, visit his official Web site at http://www.freshword.com.
