He breathes and has palpable pulses as well as normal and abnormal heart rhythms. He also talks and has normal and abnormal heart, lung and bowel sounds.
"SimMan 'Sam' is the mannequin that 'comes alive,'" according to Sharon Willis, nursing simulation lab coordinator for Oral Roberts University.
SimMan is an advanced patient simulator used for training nurses. Skills that a nurse needs to learn and perfect can be performed on SimMan in a nonthreatening learning environment.
"I think it's important that the students receive the experience they need before having to go to a hospital," Kenda Jezek, dean of the Anna Vaughn School of Nursing at ORU, said. "And it increases their confidence and self-esteem as a group that the university has invested into the School of Nursing."
SimMan is a part of the nursing simulation lab. This state-of-the-art facility includes eight mechanical hospital beds, four sinks, mounted blood-pressure cuffs, suction and oxygen units, ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes and a cardiac monitor.
According to a Laerdal Medical Web site, SimMan® provides an avenue for simulation-based education to challenge and test students' clinical and decision-making skills during realistic patient care scenarios. The mannequin includes software and interactive technology to assist in the development of realistic scenarios for student practice prior to performing in the real life setting.
Uncommon and unusual scenarios that may rarely appear in real life can be developed and practiced by students in the sim lab. The lab also provides immediate feedback to the students on their performance by videotaping their scenario, and allows for immediate review and detailed feedback on performance to the learners.
"SimMan 'Sam' has been a valuable learning tool in the ORU Anna Vaughn School of Nursing," Willis said.
