Eagles Beat TU, Women Are 4-2
|
The men's team took the Mayor's Cup for the third straight year on Dec. 3. With a crowd of nearly 9,000 looking on, Scott Sutton's Golden Eagles defeated the University of Tulsa Golden Hurricane by a score of 68 to 52.
As of Dec. 7, the Golden Eagles have played seven games, including three at the Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alas. Their record is 4-3.
The Eagles lost to Missouri State (formerly Southwest Missouri State University, a team ORU beat in the ESPN Bracket Buster game last February) on Dec. 7 by a score of 88-76. Missouri State is coached by former ORU head coach Barry Hinson. Other upcoming nonconference games include the University of Oklahoma, Minnesota University, and a rematch with Utah State. ORU lost its opener on Nov. 19 to Utah State by a score of 72-67.
This season's schedule is the men's most difficult in the last 15 years, said Cris Belvin, ORU's director of Athletic Media Relations.
On the plus side, the team is not in rebuilding mode. Belvin pointed out that this year's team features four starters from last season's Mid-Continent Conference regular-season champions and NIT participant. Those four starters include the 2005 Player of the Year, Caleb Green, Ken Tutt, Jonathan Bluitt, and Mickey Michalec.
Women's basketball has also gotten into gear. Coach Jerry Finkbeiner's team has already played six games, with only two losses so far.
Belvin said the coaches have just introduced a new "up-tempo" offense, and some of the kinks are still being worked out.
Like the men, the women's team has four returning starters--Leah Cannon, Elisha Turek, Alycia Seay, and Katie Langford--that helped the 2004-05 team win 22 games and the conference title, and advance to the NCAA Tournament.
The women's next game is on Dec. 10 against crosstown rival University of Tulsa.
