The entrance that Nolan Brown 06 made into the professional world was anything but conventional. While many of his classmates worked seasonal jobs, he purposefully dedicated his summers and other breaks to working at Legacy Bank near his hometown in Colorado.

Ultimately, Brown managed to secure a position with Legacy before he even graduated at the age of 21 with his bachelor's degree in business management.

"My interview was two years long," Brown said with a laugh.

Brown's job opportunity presented itself one day as he was filing paper work, scanning documents and doing his normal "grunt work" for Legacy. A coworker had a computer problem and Brown, being computer-savvy, helped solve the problem.

"All of a sudden, everybody's computer problems started coming my way," Brown said. "I was fixing problems on the network all the time."

The CEO of the bank took notice of Brown's abilities and began to teach him about the computer systems and software utilized by Legacy. At the end of the summer of 2005, Legacy offered Brown the position of Chief Information Officer for Legacy, which would place him in charge of maintaining all its computer systems. After graduating in spring 2006, he returned and took on his new position.

Although his base of operations is at the Legacy Bank corporate headquarters in Pueblo, Co., Brown travels often to the other 5 branches of the bank. Legacy has two branches in Colorado Springs, one in Pueblo West, one in Wiley and one in Cañon City, spreading over hundreds of miles. Despite the challenges of being needed in several places at once, Brown said he finds satisfaction from his job.

"I enjoy being able to provide people with the tools they need to do their job successfully, going in and rethinking it and getting a result," Brown said.

Aside from his responsibilities at Legacy, Brown also maintains his own web design company, called Aeneu Web Design. He plans to continue building his company, with high hopes for the future. Although he is ambitious and goal-driven, Brown said he has also realized the importance of setting qualitative goals in life, not just quantitative ones. He said he would rather spend his life investing into what pleases God, instead of trying to accomplish his personal goals and ambitions. Psalm 37:23 says that the steps of a righteous man are ordered by God. Brown said that verse struck him because he tends to have a big-picture take on life.

"It doesn't say the journey, it doesn't say the goal, it doesn't say the entire path-it says the steps," Brown said. "It requires an immense amount of trust, especially for someone who wants to be so ambitious."

In perspective, Brown said he counts his education at ORU as high quality and beneficial to his life now. Brown attributed much to the quality of professors he had at ORU.

"I'm thankful every single day for the quality of education I got at ORU," Brown said. "The professors at ORU know you and care about you. They're coming from an angle of experience and integrity and from being in the workforce."

Dr. Walter MacMillan, Associate Professor of Management for the ORU School of Business, was Brown's advisor throughout his time at ORU. Brown and MacMillan correspond often and see each other whenever possible. MacMillan speaks highly of Brown as both a former student and now a friend.

"I thought he was a person of good character," MacMillan said. "He had a lot of drive to succeed."

Even with a support system in place and a head start on his career in the business world, Brown humbly realizes that he still has much to learn. As he continues on his journey post-ORU, he emphasized that God is in control, regardless of any attempts he might make to determine the course of his life.

"We take the canvas of life and pencil in our goals and our ambitions," Brown said. "Then we freak out when God's paintbrush gets outside the lines. But when we look back at it, we see that it's a beautiful picture."
