Synergy is occurring here at ORU as students in many different majors can be found in advertising classes.

Students from multiple disciplines including business, government, art, music and other areas are enrolling in Principles of Advertising and Advertising Layout & Design. According to Cristi Freudenrich, an ORU instructor who teaches in the Communication Arts Department, faculty members from across the university are recommending students select advertising-based coursework.

"Students are searching for ways to market their ideas. They may want to sell their music like a CD, begin a start-up business, or promote a political candidate. Advertising helps them package these products for prospective audiences," said Freudenrich.

Advertising coursework is taught in ORU's Print Journalism Lab on the first floor of the LRC. The lab offers the latest industry software for print design including Adobe's Creative Suite. Advertising Layout and Design students learn communication and design theory while working extensively with Adobe Photoshop and InDesign.

"We tailor the curriculum to match industry expectations," said Freudenrich. "Our goal is to graduate students to enter their chosen profession with both theoretical and industry-specific knowledge."

Trey Tucker, a junior Marketing major, is taking Advertising Layout and Design as an elective. "I'm getting some good tips for design, some good concepts for other things that affect advertising."

Okey Maduka, a senior majoring in business administration with a minor in public relations & advertising, believes that taking classes in advertising and design has made him more creative. "One of my heart's desires is to be a representative, an ambassador. This class (Advertising Layout and Design) teaches you how to get out there, gives you a personality, and teaches you what people want."
