The Dance Performance program will prepare students physically, intellectually, and spiritually to become dance artists of excellence. They will lead and influence the current culture and impact the dance world with the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Auditions for the Dance major are June 30: 4-6:30 p.m. and August 14: 1-2:30 p.m.
on the campus of Oral Roberts University.
Amy Roark-McIntosh is proud to be directing the new B.A. dance major at ORU. She envisions a program of excellence and diversity where dance students can pursue their dreams and career goals in an environment where the whole-person is valued and nurtured to full potential. ORU will offer a strong dance technique foundation in ballet and modern dance with opportunities for further studies in jazz, tap, theatre dance, world dance, choreography, teaching methods, performance, dance ministry, among other allied studies.
The unique part about being in a Christian institution is that dance and faith can be integrated together in the teaching and learning process. McIntosh believes that this is something she has been doing all along in her life, integrating her Christian faith with her love and passion for dance, but that we have come to a new time: a time where this integration of faith and learning can be valued as a means of educating.
"I have found that art demands of the soul. As artists we draw from within and discover our inner landscapes in order that we might bring something fresh to our world. It is here that I find connection to God," said McIntosh. "When I dance I communicate from the deepest parts of my soul, the places that only God has touched. This is to be vulnerable, to be honest and open, and to share."
McIntosh is a native of Tulsa where she took her first dance classes. She has recently moved back from Jackson, MS and currently teaches dance at the University of Tulsa in the Musical Theatre program. While in Jackson, McIntosh was the Associate Chair of Dance and tenured Assistant Professor of Dance at Belhaven College where she spent five years teaching, choreographing, administrating, and performing. She was crucial in the formation of Belhaven's B.F.A. dance degree and in their receiving accreditation through the National Association of Schools of Dance.
McIntosh holds an M.F.A. in dance performance/choreography from the State University of NY College at Brockport and a B.F.A. in dance from Stephens College of Columbia, MO. As an artist she has worked internationally and nationally, performing, teaching, and choreographing. She has danced with the Kista Tucker Dance Co. and the Hendrick Dance Project of upstate NY, with Randy James Dance Works of NYC, Polarity Dance Theatre of Jackson, MS, and the Living Water Dance Co., a company she started in Jackson, MS. McIntosh believes in continuing her education and has enjoyed studies in Laban/Bartenieff movement analysis, Bill Evans dance technique, Dance Teaching Methodologies with Risa Steinberg, classical Limon modern dance technique and repertory, and a recent Stott Pilates certification.
