Campus Community Rises to $15,000 Challenge
By Eva-Marie Gooden
University president Richard Roberts visited the medical facility as part of his recent trip to Africa to conduct a crusade; the trip included official stops in Abakaliki, Lagos, and the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Upon his discovery of the hospital's need for basic ultrasound technology, Roberts promised his host, Nigerian president Olusegun Obasanjo, that funds would be committed to provide this equipment.
"This is an excellent opportunity to sow seed on a special day for a serious need," ORU's first lady, Lindsay Roberts, wrote in a Sept. 11, 2002, campus-wide e-mail. "If 5,000 students, faculty, and staff each contribute $3, the need will be met."
...And contribute they did: The full amount was raised prior to Roberts' return to the U.S., allowing him to share the news in person with President Obasanjo and other government officials who were "excited and joyous" to learn that an ultrasound unit would soon be on its way.
"We stood alongside them in prayer, and through giving," David Wagner, associate vice president for University Relations, said of the university community's provision of funds for the ultrasound. "God is pleased with our part in helping to meet the need."
