ORU Plans Varsity Club Weekend
By Jessica Allen (Class of 2003)
"It's a great opportunity for the returning athletes to get back out on the playing field. They get to wear official ORU uniforms, relive old glories, and rekindle old friendships," said Chris Welch, director of Athletic Development. "It's like a homecoming--a family reunion."
Although the events are open to spectators, only members of the Varsity Club can participate. The cost of the weekend for non-Varsity Club members is $100, which includes club membership, tickets for the basketball game, an alumni game shirt or hat, a Varsity Club Weekend shirt, dinner at the Mabee Center, and lunch at the Battle Creek Golf Club. Current members pay $50, and 2002 graduates receive a free, one-year membership. Golf is an additional $50.
"The theme of the Varsity Club is 'Celebrating the Past, Providing for the Future,'" Welch emphasized. "All of the money raised goes back into the Athletics department to fund equipment, special projects, and facility improvements, and helps offset the expenses of running a Division I athletics department."
Those who are not members of the Varsity Club will still enjoy Varsity Club Weekend. "It's a chance [for alumni] to come back and see the athletes that they watched in their time," Welch said. "They get to see their friends and be a part of this positive experience."
