Promethia Seeks Submissions
By Jessica Allen (Class of 2003)
|
"I guess you could say literature is a kind of flame," explained Dr. Kay Meyers, faculty advisor for Promethia.
Originally the English Department sponsored the publication as an outlet for aspiring writers because ORU did not offer a creative writing major. Meyers, who is in her third year as advisor, admits that the focus has changed over time. Now Promethia has become more of a class project--students involved in its production are graded, and receive internship credit. There are six students on the editorial staff, which consists of two assistant editors, two tech editors, the web site editor, and the editor-in-chief.
Meyers emphasizes that the magazine is for everyone. "We encourage people from all majors with interest in creative writing to submit their work," she said. "We want to involve students who like writing and don't necessarily have a chance to use it in their majors."
Promethia is currently accepting submissions for its 2003 edition. Students as well as alumni are invited to contribute fiction, poetry, essays, original artwork, and photography. Color photographs are welcome, but will be printed in black and white.
"We want Promethia to be balanced, reflecting the diversity of the student body and at the same time representing the highest quality of work," said Christabelle Hall, editor-in-chief . "It has always been open to alumni, but that has not really been pushed until this year. Now that we have a web site it will be easier for them to get involved."
Those interested in participating can get more information at http://www.geocities.com/promethia_oru, or e-mail their submissions to promethia2003@yahoo.com. The first deadline for submissions is Monday, Oct. 7; the second deadline is Monday, Nov. 18. Hall expects the final product to be ready in March.
