Baritone Mark Delavan (84) made his Metropolitan Opera debut on Jan. 15 at Lincoln Center in New York. Singing the role of Amonasro in Verdi's "Aida," he shared the stage with Luciano Pavaroti and Debra Voight.

Joe Adams (88) sang the National Anthem at one of President George Bush's eight inaurgural balls, held on Jan. 20. In his day job, Adams is the veterans representative for U.S. Rep. Steve Largent.

Dr. Hal Reed (75), chairman of the biology department, received a $5,120 grant from the National Geographic Society in January. Dr. Reed used the grant to travel to the Galapagos Islands in April to study a problem with two wasp species that have been causing a threat to the unique native community on the Islands. He and Dr. Peter Landolt of the U.S. Department of Agriculture tested a technique of detecting and monitoring the wasps using chemical attractants they discovered and are developing.
