Legacy Breakfast Honors Parents, Grads

One of the things we love to do at ORU is celebrate success. On May 2, we celebrated big-time with over 100 alumni parents and their about-to-graduate sons and daughters at the second annual Legacy Breakfast.

Held at the Hilton, which is right across the street from ORU, the breakfast was organized and hosted by the Alumni Relations staff: Director Natalie Bounds-Adams, Events Coordinator Winnie Perdue, and Administrative Assistant Sandy Stump. Men's and Women's Chaplains Carol Holderness and Eric Peterson attended and offered prayers of blessing for the graduates. Guests were able to sit back, relax, get acquainted -- or reacquainted -- with other families, and enjoy a great meal before the Commencement machine kicked into high gear.

"This was an opportunity for parents to spend some quality time with their grads before the hustle and bustle of Commencement, and before they embarked on new careers, moved to new cities, got married and otherwise entered the world as adults," said Bounds-Adams. "So many families told us how meaningful the time together was. Prayer time was especially meaningful, as families gathered around their graduates and prayed for them."

If your son or daughter is graduating from ORU in 2010, be on the lookout for an invitation to the breakfast. (You can also give us a heads-up so we'll be sure to invite you.) And if you have other offspring who are looking at colleges, consider sending them to a College Weekend at ORU. The next one is November 5-7.

With all of the positive changes that have taken place at ORU in recent months, including millions of dollars in renovations, there has never been a better time to be an ORU student! (Or the parent of an ORU student!)

Here's what some of the breakfast guests had to say:

Laura and I wanted to thank you and the Alumni Association for sponsoring the Legacy Breakfast on Commencement morning. What a joy it was to share that special time with our daughter, Erin, to reconnect with fellow alumni over a delicious breakfast and to receive special recognition with the gift of our alumni pin. The event could not have been better! It made us proud to have graduated from ORU and even more proud to know that Erin is now following what we hope will be a "family tradition." The Lord willing, we plan to enjoy a "repeat" of the event in three years when our other daughter, Katie, graduates! –Ben 80, 84 and Laura (Steadman-81) Barnett

The ORU Legacy Breakfast provided a wonderful opportunity for alumni parents to share in a special moment with their graduate and with other ORU alumni parents and graduates. ORU is in a miraculous phase of new beginnings, and the Legacy Breakfast is a new tradition that recognizes and honors the significant decision of ORU alums to entrust their students to ORU. We are so pleased both of our daughters chose to attend ORU and will always be deeply appreciative of the faculty, staff, and administration at ORU. –Brad 77, 79 and Brenda (Brown-79) Thomas

We had a great time at the Legacy Breakfast. I got to see some people I hadn't seen in 30 years as well as a kid I coached in high school baseball 15 years ago. My family sat at a table with the Halsmers and thoroughly enjoyed getting to know them. The food was great as well as the hostess. –Herb Adams 75

My husband and I absolutely loved attending the ORU Legacy Breakfast. For me, it brought back wonderful memories of ORU as well as reminding me of the incredible impact those few years had on my life. I have been teaching a Bible study on spiritual heritage and, for me, ORU has always been a rich, endearing part of my spiritual history. I came to ORU as a young, insecure Spirit-filled Catholic girl looking for more of God. I found people – students, professors and staff – who had similar hunger for God and carried God-sized testimonies and dreams. Spiritual seeds were planted in my heart that are still bearing fruit. From the time I graduated, the words of Oral about being a person of excellence and his directive to carry God's light into a dark world, helped steer the course of my life. Sitting there at breakfast, I was reminded of how I was still knit together with like hearts sharing the same powerful vision. I also saw the fruit of those years at ORU in other people's lives. And then, this many years later, I got to see the baton being passed down to my own son. How incredible! That is truly abundance and legacy! –Linda (Mako) Hefner 79
