Heels to Wheels: Andretti Bain Meets Namesake at Indy 500

Olympic silver medalist and ORU alumnus Andretti Bain has been invited to visit famous racecar driver Mario Andretti and even take a ride around the track at the Indianapolis 500 Memorial Day race on May 26.

Bain, who was named after Andretti, was first contacted by an ESPN producer and has been in contact with Andretti for more than a year. This will be Bain's first time meeting Andretti face to face.

"This is an opportunity to see how he lives in his world," Bain said. "He doesn't race anymore, but this is where he got his start."

Bain is known for his excellence in track and field, having received a silver medal in relay racing at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

"I was never particularly a racecar fan," Bain said. "My parents must have been very much into it. I admired track and field. It was the only sport I gave my full attention to."

Bain said his father was a sports fan and that his mother heard the name Mario Andretti often and thought it was a good name, so they named their son Andretti after him.

Bain said that all the opportunity he's been given has ultimately come from competing for ORU.

"I'm truly appreciative for all ORU has done for me," Bain said. "I have both of my degrees from ORU and I want to keep ORU on the map."
