Health Preparedness for Swine Influenza

As most of you are probably aware, the swine flu has been sickening people across the United States and Mexico. There have not been any documented cases in Oklahoma at this time, but Oral Roberts University has already begun to take the necessary precautions to make sure we keep students, faculty, and staff as safe as possible on campus.

We are carefully monitoring the situation and are reviewing emergency plans in light of this specific situation. There has NOT been a case of swine flu reported at ORU, but the university has been in contact with local and state agencies to keep updated on the current status of the swine flu.

It is important for the ORU community to keep as healthy as possible. The following are recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control Web site:
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
  • Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
  • If you get sick with influenza, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.

You can get more information on the flu at CDC Swine Flu FAQ page. If you are not feeling well, contact Student Health Services at 918.495.6341 or after 5 p.m. call Security at 918-495-7750. Or for emergencies dial 911 immediately.

For general information contact Student Development at 918-495-7703.

Sincerely,
Dr. Ralph Fagin
