Sophomore Student Wins Award Typically Given to Ph.D. Students

David Bulger, a sophomore chemistry major, recently won the February 2009 Submeta Open Notebook Science Award. This international award is typically awarded to Ph.D. students, making David's award an outstanding achievement.

David is working under the supervision of ORU chemistry professor Dr. Robert Stewart and collaborating with over 20 scientists and their students in four different countries in an open notebook crowdsourcing endeavor to measure the solubility of organic compounds in non-aqueous solvents (part of a larger cheminformatic anti-malarial drug discovery program). David's work on measuring solubilities using nuclear magnetic resonance has contributed to a body of knowledge that may one day lead to a cure for malaria. David won $500 and a one-year subscription to the prestigious science journal, Nature.
