Dr Gillen Retirement Dinner
Dr. George Gillen Celebration Dinner is May 3
Longtime ORU business professor Dr. George Gillen is known across campus as “the Czar” … and as far as the 14,000 or so students he has taught since 1965 are concerned, he will retain that title even after he retires this spring. To acknowledge his ongoing influence and honor his 51 years of service, ORU will salute him at a special dinner on Tuesday, May 3.
The dinner will begin at 6:30 p.m. on the 60th floor of CityPlex Towers. To sponsor a table or purchase a ticket, click here.
In addition to celebrating Dr. Gillen as founding chairman of Undergraduate Business—a position he held for 41 years—and as a founding faculty member who is completing his 51st year in the classroom this spring, the dinner will help us add yet another line to the Czar’s impressive list of honors and achievements. As part of ORU’s 50th Anniversary Comprehensive Campaign, the Development office is conducting a $500,000 drive to put his name on the new Global Learning Center’s Virtual Reality Room. To date, nearly $110,000 in gifts and pledges has come in. By sponsoring a table at the dinner or purchasing tickets, you’ll be helping us pay tribute to a man who has made a lasting impression on our campus.
The Virtual Reality Room will provide a fully immersive, multidimensional learning experience that allows students to sense they are actually “inside” the environment they are studying—sort of like being in Dr. Gillen’s Economics class! Studies show that virtual reality improves student engagement and attention by 300%, and test scores by 30%. Placing Dr. Gillen’s name on this room would be a great way to say “thank you” to a man who is so passionate about learning. You can read more about the Czar and this initiative here.
