Summer 2014

IT Organization and Support

  • Information technology assumed the new name IT@212 as a means to focus on improved customer service, and creatively leverage technology to benefit everyone.
  • The helpdesk services were enhanced to become a ‘Concierge’ style of service to be more visible and accessible. The Information Desk at LRC Floor 3 entry will now be staffed and called the IT Concierge Service and is staffed every day during normal operating hours.
  • Students completed a showcase-of-technology that allows students to further their belief that they can reach globally into every person’s world.
  • Applied for innovation publications and awards that included student ideas on the creative use of technology. We were accepted to speak at one global technology conference, two national technology conferences, highlighted in two national articles and publications, co-speaker with the NFL CIO and two other universities at an economic technology summit, and applied for two national grant competitions.

Improvement of Network, Desktop, and VDI performance

  • Replaced all old network switches in the LRC/GC building.
  • Provided fiber connections between all wiring closets and the server room.
  • All LRC/GC wiring closets will be modified to ensure simplicity, cleanliness, and have ‘fail-over’ functionality where possible.
  • Network and data server monitoring software was properly configured ion all network switches and servers to identify problems before they affect users or the classrooms.
  • The VDI (Virtual Desktop) servers were upgraded to allow virtual desktops to perform at a higher level of stability and performance.
  • Computers and VDI environments were upgraded to include all browsers and more current versions of browsers.

Student Facing Enhancements

  • Deployed the enhanced Cable TV services through Cox Business Solutions to all dorm rooms.
  • Upgraded and enhanced the Housing (Dorm) application, dorm reporting, and selection process.
  • Provided a visible ‘Concierge Services’ desk to better identify with the IT issues related to students.
  • Completed Single-Sign-On methodology for students between Vision, D2L, Chalk & Wire, and the Online Portal. (All applications will eventually have one sign-on)
  • Completed the Integrate and coordination of the ORU IT systems functionality into the Online Student portal for online students.
  • Incorporated numerous student workers who provided IT with insights on how our summer projects and IT overall can better serve students.
  • Developed FAQ for new students on student applications and released it on a wearable USB wrist band.
  • Worked with Academics to enhance Online Program measurements and functionality from all IT systems.
  • Completed the improvements to student transcripts for global electronic access.
  • Completed the new meal-plans through Blackboard transactional services.


Summer 2013

Cable TV Upgrade
The coax cable TV system was completely replaced in all the dorms. This includes over 1400 cable drops, thousands of feet of coax cable and fiber, new amplifiers, connectors, splitters, taps and wall connectors. Fiber now feeds all dorms from the cable point of entry in the GC building. Connected to the fiber, new coax cable has been installed to every room. This has all been professionally designed by Blonder Tongue Laboratories and installed by Banning Technologies along with IT personnel. Both of these companies are industry leaders. Signal strength has been tested to every room and is showing excellent strength.
Work continued into the fall semester to bring the same signal quality to the Aerobic Center. Several new cable locations have been added in the building and were made functional by the start of the semester.


WiFi Upgrade
Over 10 miles of data cable were pulled to various locations by the IT wiring team. Every dorm room now has a full 8-pin CAT6 wired connection.
Wireless issues have been and are continuing to be addressed as we work with our equipment vendor to upgrade and tweak the system to provide better wireless access. Several changes have been made and we look forward to getting better test data as students utilize the WiFi. Keep an eye out for future WiFi Surveys from our IT team!
The IT Infrastructure and Network team completed a major upgrade to the network core in July. Our network core was approximately 5 years old and was not capable of handling the plethora of new devices and applications that are now dependent upon the network. In the last five years we have added many desktop “hard wired” connections, the WiFi system along with thousands of WiFi dependent mobile devices, VoIP, D2L online learning, fire and security alarms, environmental applications and door access. Our network was completely saturated. Work on this upgrade continued into the fall semester and will address additional areas of the network that are in need of attention.
We have completed the transition from our previous ISPs that were providing 300MB of Internet to our new ISPs which increases our Internet bandwidth to 1.8GB. This gives us 6 times greater bandwidth and the ability to “fail over” if one path has an outage.
