ACM Website

The ORU Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery provides an environment where technological experience and resources can be shared. Our goal is to create opportunities for members to interact with each other, to establish relationships with professionals in their fields, to increase awareness of current events in technology, and to prepare them for their future careers.

ACM is an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the art, science, engineering and application of information technology. It serves both professional and public interests by fostering an open interchange of information and by promoting the highest professional and ethical standards. Founded in 1947, the Association for Computing Machinery is the largest and oldest educational and scientific society for computing professionals in the world. It keeps its members up to date on new trends, directions and developments in computing and emerging technologies.

Kappa mu Epsilon

Mathematics Honor Society
ORU Corresponding Secretary & Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Vincent Dimiceli phone 918.495.6700 email vdimiceli@oru.edu

National KME Website

KAappa Mu Epsilon is a specialized honor society in Mathematics. KME was founded in 1931 to promote the interest of mathematics among undergraduate students. Its chapters are located in colleges and universities of recognized standing which offer a strong mathematics major. The chapters' members are selected from students of mathematics and other closely related fields who have maintained standards of scholarship, have professional merit, and have attained academic distinction. Both men and women are eligible for membership.

The society has grown steadily since its founding and today has one hundred eighteen chapters and approximately sixty-one thousand members in thirty-four states.

The primary purposes of being a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon include the following :
1. to further the interests of mathematics in those schools which place their primary emphasis on undergraduate programs;
2. to help undergraduate students realize the important role that mathematics has played in the development of civilization;
3. to develop an appreciation of the power and beauty possessed by mathematics, due, mainly, to its demand for logical and rigorous modes of thought;
4. to provide a society for the recognition of outstanding achievement in the study of mathematics at the undergraduate level;
5. to disseminate the knowledge of mathematics and familiarize its members with the current progress in this important area of human interest.

Computer Club

ORU Faculty Sponsor: Dr. Dave Eland  phone 918.495.6699 email daveland@oru.edu

This year, ORU sent TWO teams from the Computer Science and Mathematics Department to the annual ACM South Central USA Regional Programming Contest. The contest was held at four locations: Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Abilene Christian University, Oklahoma East Central University, and Baylor University. We attended the East Central University site in Ada, Oklahoma, since it is closest to Tulsa. All of the sites were linked over the Internet, and all problems submitted were judged at the Louisiana site. We left the ORU campus at 1:00 pm on Friday, October 17th, and returned around 9:00 pm on Saturday, October 18th.

The contest was held on Saturday from 12:00 to 5:00. There were 9 problems to be solved. The team that won first place solved 7 problems. (The winner goes on to the international competition, held this year in Stockholm, Sweden.)

The top ORU team ranked 1st in the undergraduate division at our site and 2nd in the undergraduate division for the entire region. They were 4th overall, out of 21 teams at our local site, and 13th overall, out of 68 teams that participated for the entire region. This is an EXCELLENT result for this year. In this contest, ORU went up against the major universities in the region (Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana).

The students representing ORU were Antony Akshay, Alexander Galvez, David Kobilnyk, Jeyan Oorjitham, Jonathan Paugh and Jeremiah Quitto. They all enjoyed the trip and were grateful for the opportunity to participate. Many of them are looking forward to participating next year.

The Mathematical Association of America is the largest professional society that focuses on undergraduate mathematics education. Our members include university, college, and high school teachers; graduate and undergraduate students; pure and applied mathematicians; computer scientists; statisticians; and many others in academia, government, business, and industry. We welcome all who are interested in the mathematical sciences. The mission of the MAA is "to advance the mathematical sciences, especially at the collegiate level."

This mission guides our core interests:

  • Education: We support learning in the mathematical sciences by encouraging effective curriculum, teaching, and assessment at all levels.
  • Research: We support research, scholarship, and its exposition at all appropriate levels and venues, including research by undergraduates.
  • Professional Development: We provide resources and activities that foster scholarship, professional growth, and cooperation among teachers, other professionals, and students.
  • Public Policy: We influence institutional and public policy through advocacy for the importance, uses, and needs of the mathematical sciences.

Public Appreciation: We promote the general understanding and appreciation of mathematics. We encourage students of all ages, particularly those from underrepresented groups, to pursue activities and careers in the mathematical sciences.
