Cheerleader and Mascot Tryouts

Tryouts for the 2019-2020 academic year are canceled this weekend, due to scheduling conflicts. Information will be released soon on how you can join the program next year. Please email spirit@oru.edu for more information regarding updates on program activities.

Cheer Tryout Requirements/Procedures

All current and prospective ORU students trying out for cheerleading are required to attend the preliminary tryouts on Friday evening. Those selected from preliminary tryouts will proceed to final tryouts on Saturday. All those auditioning for the squad must present a completed Spirit Program application and a $25.00 application fee at Friday's preliminary tryouts.

Females

All female cheerleaders will be judged on personality, floor presence and skills.  All females must be energetic, athletic, possess a good "stage presence" and advanced cheerleading skills. 

  • Tumbling Requirements
    Standing tumbling: Cheerleaders should be able to consistently execute some form of standing tumble. Back hand springs are acceptable; however, standing backs are preferred.
    Running Tumbling: preferred passes are round-off back, hand spring backs, lay outs or fulls.
  • Stunting Requirements
    All females must have an advanced knowledge of co-ed stunting skills including pyramids and basket tosses. Required stunts will be one toss stunt, stunt with a twisting dismount and one stunt sequence of choice.
  • Tryout Attire
    Female participants should wear an athletics shirt and athletic shorts, cheer appropriate shoes and a white shirt hair ribbon.

Males 

All males should be energetic, possessing basic cheerleading skills.  

  • Tumbling Requirements
    Standing Tumbling: Standing backs are preferred.
    Running Tumbling: Some form of running tumbling is preferred.
  • Stunting Requirements
    All males must have a knowledge of co-ed stunting skills. Required stunts will be one toss stunt and one stunt sequence of choice.
  • Tryout Attire
    Participants should wear a plain white shirt with blue shorts.


Mascot Tryout Requirements/Procedures                                                                              

Tryouts for ELI, the Golden Eagles' mascot, are held at the same time with the cheer and dance tryouts on the Oral Roberts University campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Those trying out should prepare a two-three minute routine set to music and be prepared to perform the routine wearing the ELI costume.  Judges will rate the applicant on how he/she entertains, whether he/she effectively portrays the mascot and on his/her ability to relate to and get a basketball crowd involved in a game.   Complete the Spirit Program Application and bring it with the $25.00 application fee to tryouts.
