Bonebrake Book Boosts Scholarship Fund

ORU alumnus Bob Keith Bonebrake (Communications ’76) is launching a new book written to help fund a scholarship program at ORU.

Bonebrake's recently released book, titled One Lousy Friday Before Easter, is an unusual hybrid combining a personal memoir, a short biography of his late sister, Marilyn Bonebrake LaPointe, and a Christian apologetic or defense of the Christian faith. The story is a personal reflection on faith lost in grief and reclaimed in rationality. Marilyn, a 1976 alumna (Communications), worked as a scriptwriter for the Oral Roberts and You syndicated television program.

Bonebrake says one of his primary reasons for writing the book was to raise funds for the Marilyn Bonebrake LaPointe Scholarship at ORU. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student participant in the successful new debate program. The first scholarship award was made this year.

All proceeds from the first year of book sales will go to the scholarship. In addition, the first 1,000 people contributing $30 or more to the scholarship fund will receive from Bonebrake, as a personal gift and at no charge, a signed softcover copy of the book. Anyone wishing to support the scholarship fund can send a donation directly to ORU, 7777 South Lewis, Tulsa, OK 74171. Checks should be made out to ORU with "Marilyn Bonebrake LaPointe Scholarship" on the memo line. Credit card donations can be made online; enter "Marilyn Bonebrake LaPointe Scholarship" in the Other Instructions box.

Bonebrake had a long career as a journalist, editor, and writer in Oklahoma, Washington, D.C., and California. During the late 1970s he served the international wire service, The Associated Press, as state sports editor for Oklahoma. During that time he covered a national championship season for the University of Oklahoma's football team, including the Heisman Trophy season for running back Billy Sims. Later, he was a longtime chief Business/Oil editor for the Tulsa World. Additionally, he worked as the Sports Information Director at ORU, filling that role during one of the most productive eras in ORU athletics. During his tenure, pitcher Mike Moore was the number-one pick in the nation during the Major League Baseball draft. In addition, in 1982 he handled press and publicity for the Midwest Regional basketball tournaments for both the NCAA and NIT national championships. In a rare move, both groups selected ORU's Mabee Center for their regional tournament in the same year.
