Establishment
In June of 1989, the State of Oklahoma officially recognized the newly formed Oral Roberts University Alumni Foundation as a separate, nonprofit corporation. The foundation qualifies as a tax-exempt organization under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Gifts made to the foundation are deductible as charitable class="text" contributions under Section 170 of the Internal Revenue Code.
Purpose
The purpose of the Alumni Foundation is to raise support from alumni and friends of the University. Funds are directed to the University as designated by the individual donor and by the foundation board.
Leadership
The foundation is governed by a ten-member board consisting of: the chairman, vice chairman, secretary, and treasurer of the Alumni Board; the Alumni Director; the president of the ORU Faculty Assembly; one person appointed by the Alumni Board; one person appointed by the Foundation Board; the chairman of the ORU Regents' Committee for Development/Alumni Relations; and the ORU Vice President for University Relations.
Accountability
An independent financial audit is conducted annually and is reviewed by the foundation board and presented to the Alumni Board of Directors. An annual report of giving and foundation activities is published in Excellence magazine.
Types of Gifts
- Annual Fund--These support the general expenses of the Alumni Foundation and Alumni Association, including Homecoming, publications, chapter events, and Web page improvements.
- Temporarily Restricted Gifts--These are received with donor restrictions to particular departments or programs within ORU. Funds are held in restricted accounts until authorized disbursement is requested.
- Permanently Restricted Gifts--These are held indefinitely. Only the interest earned on these funds can be accessed with board approval.
- Campaign Gifts--These are designed to generate substantial funds, usually over a number of years, to finance major capital projects or other programs of ORU, such as the new Student Center.
- Corporate Matching Gifts--These enable donors to double, triple, or further multiply their contribution to the ORU Alumni Foundation through their employer's participation in the matching gift program. (Note: Make sure that all checks are made out to the ORU Alumni Foundation, not Oral Roberts University.)
