105 – Bible Memory

This event is made up of rounds in which each student-competitor quotes a Scripture reference and the corresponding verses. Two consecutive verses are to be quoted from the same chapter by each student per round. Student-competitors remain in the contest until they have no more Scriptures to quote. The competitor who successfully completes the final round is the winner.

Competitors may use any of the following Bible versions: King James Version, New King James Version and New International Version. The student must state the version being quoted in each round.

111 – Lightning Chess

Students participate in a lightning chess tournament wherein all moves, rulings, and questions are governed by the official laws of chess as established by the FIDE (Federation Internationale des Echecs). Lightning Chess has a five-minute time limit per player and makes use of a chess clock to regulate the game.

115 – Essay Writing

This event measures students' ability to persuade readers using writing. Essay topic for 2012 is:

  • What is the relationship between religious tolerance and terrorism?

The essay topic is included in the 2012 Competition Handbook as well.

120 – Poem Writing

The poetry competition highlights the talents of those skilled in the art of creative written expression. Entries must be received by the competition office no later than April 16.

125 – Short Story

For authors with the most vivid imaginations, the short story competition challenges them to write a fictional composition of 1,000 to 1,500 words. Entries are due in the competition office by April 16.

130 – Physical Science Projects

Students conduct research in physical science throughout the school year and prepare a poster-board presentation of the findings which is judged at the competition.

135 – Biological Science Projects (including Environmental Science)

Students conduct research in environmental science throughout the school year and prepare a poster-board presentation of the findings which is judged at the competition.

137 – Lab Investigation

Teams consisting of three students will solve a multipart problem requiring both team and individual efforts. After completing on-site laboratory investigations, teams will come to a conclusion regarding their results. Each team will document in a lab report the investigative process utilized and the logical reasoning/critical thinking required to reach the conclusion that best explains their results.

138 – On Site Engineering Challenge

Teams of three students each test their engineering prowess and teamwork skills by tackling a surprise challenge presented on-site.

140 – Spelling Challenge

This event is an oral spelling bee, with all words used taken from the current edition of the Spell It! produced by Scripps Howard. The actual word list is available online free of charge at www.myspellit.com. In the event that the spelling competition exceeds 20 rounds, words may be selected from alternate sources.

One competitor will represent each school entering the event.

141 – Math Challenge

This written exam measures the knowledge of the mathmetically inclined in the various discipline areas of mathmatics. The 2012 challenge focused on geometric concepts.

The challenge is composed of 50 questions and five tie-breaker questions.

142 – Geography Challenge

For the geographically adept, this written examination measures the knowledge of students in the various disciplines of geography. The 2012 challenge covered the Continent of Africa.

The Bible challenge is a timed written examination about books of the Bible. For 2012, the challenge covered Hebrews and I and II Peter.

The written examination for 2012  will test one's knowledge of Shakespeare.

146 – Yearbook

Schools enter their most recently published yearbook. Electronic versions will not be accepted. The yearbook must be the product of student staff and not that of adult advisors. There must be a minimum of four students working on the yearbook.

Yearbook entries are to be received by April 16 in the Competition office.

150 – Academic Bowl

The Academic Bowl is an exciting match of wits challenging team aptitude and adeptness in answering questions related to a broad range of academic subjects: history, literature, mathmatics, science, current events, and the arts. Winning teams advance to the quarter, semi and final rounds.

 160 – Spanish

This event involves both the presentation of a prepared Spanish poem and the extemporaneous reading of another.  Only those who are non-native speakers of the language in which they are reciting may compete in this event.

175 – Interactive Design for Web/Disc and/or Streaming Media

Web projects submitted in this category should reflect current practices. Disc projects should be submitted on a CD ROM or DVD and should also reflect current practices.Both should be demonstrated by industry standards. Students are encouraged to study experd design, using a mixture of established techniques and original ideas to create a compelling, functional experience.
