Instructor of Management
Jim Toft grew up in Southern Norway as the son of a small business owner who had traveled the world as a young man. Exciting stories from strange and different cultures, exotic countries and people captivated Toft at an early age. He felt particularly drawn to America, having come from an area in Norway where many, if not most, had relatives that emigrated to the US in the 1900's. In fact, most of his granduncles and grandaunts had left Norway to pursue the American dream. In his youth, Toft excelled in several sports, soccer in particular. He chose not to accept an opportunity to join a top division football club, but Toft is still an avid soccer and sports fan.
14 years after Jim Toft first stepped onto the ORU campus as a grad student, he was back to teach strategy, management and international business. Before he returned, Toft had lived in Northern Europe, Spain and Dubai. With that, he had the opportunity to travel and do business in many countries around the world. Because of Toft's experience in upper management and business positions within multiple “Best Places to Work” companies, including PwC, he has a clear idea of what students can expect as they enter into a professional life.
Jim Toft likes to believe that he emphasizes “what works” as a strategist, manager, and business person. He hammers specific insights into the students’ mind including the understanding, etiquette and devotion that is needed to succeed in a professional setting. Nitpicking, too many details, and lofty, unpractical knowledge is not his cup of tea. His passion is to see the students grow, utilize their potential and become prepared to succeed, not only as a business person but as a whole person and change-maker with a higher purpose. Toft truly appreciates ORU, the students, the faculty and the mission of the University. He believes ORU will play a bigger role than ever moving forward.
In addition to teaching at ORU, Toft is also working on his Ph.D. dissertation in Economics and Business through a global top 50 business school, Maastricht University in the Netherlands. He holds an MBA in Entrepreneurship and an M.A. in Christian Counseling with honors and high honors from Oral Roberts University, Toft also earned a B.A. in Cultural- and Social Sciences at the University of Bergen, Norway. He is married to his high school sweetheart and together they have two sons.
