Program Overview

Admission to medical, dental and most other health profession schools in the United States is very selective. Only students with excellent grades and admission test scores, knowledge of their health profession and in most cases, health care experience are being admitted. Personal qualities and commitment are also important.

All pre-professional programs at ORU start with a general set of courses based on the admission requirements of several representative schools in that field. Often these schools have unique preparatory requirements, and it is recommended that a catalog be obtained from each school being considered for professional degree application to determine the exact requirements. This allows for inclusion of the appropriate courses in an ORU program and facilitates a judicious transfer from ORU to the professional program.

Pre-dental students should follow their own interests and aptitudes in selecting one of several recognized majors, such as biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, psychology or health and exercise science as a pre-professional route. All of these pre-professional programs provide a balanced liberal arts education with strengths both in science and humanities.

While the above emphasized majors (biology, chemistry, biomedical engineering, psychology and health and exercise science) are the most widely recommended and recognized in the pursuit of pre-dental health training, ORU appreciates an individuals' need to follow their God-given gifts and abilities in selecting a major. Therefore, ORU offers the opportunity to adapt any major to a pre-dental program by including the following courses to a course of study:

  • Mathematical Analysis or Calculus
  • Biology lecture/lab (2 semesters)
  • Chemistry lecture/lab (2 semesters)
  • Organic Chemistry lecture/lab (2 semesters)
  • Physics lecture/lab (2 semesters)

These courses are required by both medical and dental schools and should provide adequate preparation for taking the MCAT or DAT exam. Highly qualified students may be admitted to medical school after three years of undergraduate training. All pre-professional health services majors are encouraged to closely with their degree advisor.
