Health Exercise Science

Bachelor of Science Degree

Program Overview

The Department of Health, Leisure, and Sport Sciences is an integral part of the university's whole-person philosophy. Its objectives are twofold. First, through a general education program it seeks to assist every student in developing a personal wellness life-style that is conductive to optimal health fitness and well-being. Second, through a professional education program, it provides a curriculum and experiences for students to work in the health, fitness, recreation, leisure, and sports management fields; teach health and physical education; or qualify for physical therapy or medical professional school.

The health and exercise science major provides a study of the concepts and principles that form the foundation of total wellness. An HES major has the choice of three concentration areas with each being specifically designed to assist the major in preparing for their future. The three concentrations are: exercise specialist, pre-physical therapy and pre-sports medicine.

The exercise specialist concentration is designed to assist the major in becoming a personal trainer or organizing and administering health fitness programs in one of several settings including health clubs, corporations or medical facilities. The pre-physical therapy and pre-sports medicine concentration areas require attending a graduate professional program beyond the bachelor degree to become a licensed physical therapist or medical doctor.

The HLSS department is located in the Kenneth H. Cooper Aerobics Center. Kenneth H. Cooper, a former Air Force physician and innovator of the exercise program used by astronauts, supported this aspect of the whole-person philosophy. The Aerobics Center facility includes classrooms, an indoor swimming pool, basketball courts, racquetball courts, an indoor running track and state-of-the-art exercise equipment which include free weights and machine weights as well as a variety of cardio/aerobic machines.
